I have exactly the same problem. I had created a new field, names categsplus, type categorie. When I put multiple, the categories aren't saved, but if I put not multiple, the choice is saved.

Where is the problem ?

Can I assign Joomla Articles to multiple Categories?

No, but there are some options to consider....

Possible work-arounds for putting a Joomla Article in more than one category include:

Use tags component.

Use Seblod.

For that you can create select dynamic field with query to show categories tree... but storage of this field must be different from "catid".

In this case you can manage your categories as standart category object. But you can assign articles to more than one category.

For output you can use seblod list and search. Just put this field into search form and set needed id`s of categories in menu override options.

Basically SEBLOD do what Joomla! do, and in this case Joomla! is not multi-categories. So if you store a muli categories field in the colum "catid" it will not working. 

SEBLOD don't hack Joomla!, by cons it add more feature !

So like Jeka said, SEBLOD allow you to manage that by a custom field soted in an other column ( Standard | Article | your_column ).

if you look after my precedent post with screen capture, you'll see that it is exactly what I did (ok, it's difficult to see because the image is reduced by forum, don't ask me why).

But when creating a field type categorie, there is a button "multiple". Values are stocked in my custom fied when multiple is off, and aren't where multiple is on. 

In fact, the Jeka solution work, that's right, but I like to understand why something is not working ;).

ps : and categplus field is a varchar(255), not a numeric field, of course.
