I think it is not used much except for a few sneaky places like when using Groupx field not sure... intro-view-where
Your search and list views do most of the intro stuff.

Beside what is written in the article linked by Bucklash it is also used as "fallback" when there are no fields set in the list view in search type if I recall correctly, it's main purpose was to be used when you choose to display articles blog using Joomla category blog, but this is not recommended anymore (you should use seblod search/list for that) so in practice it is not used on much places anymore.
